Omar Lavallee: Narrow Gauge Railways of Canada

Narrow Gauge Railways of Canada

Description

"Narrow Gauge Railways of Canada" is a "survey course" about one of the most interesting chapters in Canadian railway history. The late Omer Lavallee's original work was published by Railfare Books in 1972, and soon sold out. Long-sought by collectors, historians and railway enthusiasts, his excellent material has now been expanded (over 40 per cent) by the author's long-time friend and collaborator, editor Ronald Ritchie. Omer Lavallee's survey indicates the Province of Ontario, Canada, was the birth place - in July 1871 - of the first narrow gauge steam-operated public railway in North America...and the Lingan Colliery Tramway in Cape Breton may have been - in 1866 - the first narrow gauge steam-operated railway in the Western Hemisphere. Two dozen different railway systems are covered within the book's twenty-five chapters. There are 192 rare photographs - including a section of 66 full-colour photos - interesting sketches, and informative maps of each line to show route details. These are keyed to an overall map, pinpointing the railway's exact location within Canada." Narrow Gauge Railways of Canada" contains listings of railway mileage, chronological and geographical facts about each system, and locomotive information. Several other useful features include: time-mileage charts, 50 diagrams, charts and tables, equipment rosters for virtually all the railways, and gradient profiles of three steeply-graded mountain routes. The book includes a specially-commissioned painting by famed railway artist Wentworth Folkins, illustrating Newfoundland Railway's "Overland" approaching Port-aux-Basque on the last lap of its 547-mile journey from Newfoundland's capital city, St. John's.

D.W. Winnicott, a psychoanalyst of extraordinary grace and originality, left a body of work distinguished by fierce independence of mind, profound playfulness and technique, and passionate intelligence. Holding and Interpretation, a verbatim record of his sessions with a psychotic patient, vividly illustrates his enormous contribution to psychoanalytic theory and technique, his skill at holding the patient in the analytic session and providing guidance through sensitive interpretation. It is a rare working portrait of one of the true giants of psychoanalysis a very vast subject, as he said, which has the great charm of being really useful. " Satirist, philosopher, elegist, aphorist, cultural historian -- Peter Porter is perhaps too singular a talent to be described as 'representative' of the age: an Australian whose easy familiarity with the breadth of European culture puts most Europeans to shame, he has long held the reputation of one of our most intellectually promiscuous and culturally sophisticated Disrupting Early Childhood Education Research : Imagining New Possibilities free pdf writers. Porter uses the poem as a means through which a thought can be pursued; this selection from fifty years' work allows us the first opportunity to fully survey the quality and breadth of that thought, and the unfailing intensity of its light. In short, his Selected Poems is a one-volume education: Porter's subtle and profound sense of history permits him to read any event as a point in a dynamic space where the forces of time and culture converge. From these coordinates, he gives perspective, direction and bearing to our contemporary life, and allows us to read the pattern of our ideas, art and loves on the map of an ancient terrain. That he has done all this with such immense good humour and human compassion is one of the literary miracles of our time.

Disrupting Early Childhood Education Research : Imagining New Possibilities

Description

Recent and increasing efforts to standardize young children's academic performance have shifted the emphases of education toward normative practices and away from qualitative, substantive intentions. Connection to human experience, compassion for societal ailments, and the joys of learning are straining under the pressure of quantitative research, competition, and test scores, exemplified by federal funding competitions and policymaking. Disrupting Early Childhood Education Research critically interrogates the traditional foundations of early childhood research practices to disrupt the status quo through imaginative, cutting-edge research in diverse U.S. and international contexts. Its chapters are driven by empirical data derived from unique research projects and a variety of contemporary methodologies that include phenomenological studies, auto-ethnographic writings, action-oriented studies, arts-based methodologies, and other innovative approaches. By giving voice to marginalized social science researchers who are active in learning, school, and early education sectors, this volume explores the meanings of actionable and everyday approaches based on the experiences of young children, their families, and educators.

Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story

Description

A richly-illustrated adaptation of Anne Rice's interview with the Vampire, told through the eyes of the vampire Claudia, who was just a little girl when she was turned by the vampire Lestat. Though she psends many years of happiness with her two vampire fathers, she gradually grows discontent with their insistence upon treating her like a little girl, even though she has lived as long as any mortal man ...and her lust to kill is certainly no less than theirs...

Eugenie Tsai provides a curatorial overview of the exhibition, which includes early writings, drawings, and other work with religious, erotic, and pop culture motifs that deepen our understanding of Smithson's diverse practice. Other contributions to the volume are a previously unpublished interview with Smithson by Moira Roth; a substantive historical and critical essay by Thomas Crow; an essay by MOCA curator Cornelia Butler discussing Smithson's lineage and his influence on contemporary artists; and a series of texts focusing on key works from Smithson's oeuvre, including Incidents of Mirror Travel in the Yucatan by Suzaan Boettger, Enantiomorphic Chambers by Ann Reynolds, Airport Terminal Project by Mark Linder, Spiral Jetty by Jennifer Roberts, Heap of Language by Richard Sieburth, Proposal for Monument at Antartica [sic] by Robert Sobieszek. The book also features the complete Library List--a posthumously compiled list of publications in Smithson's personal library--with an Interview with the Vampire: Claudia's Story download ebook pdf introduction by Alexander Alberro, as well as an exhibition checklist and annotated exhibition chronology.

Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History

Description

In the tradition of "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, "a stunningly vivid historical account of the forty-year battle between Comanche Indians and white settlers for control of the American West, centering on Quanah, the greatest Comanche chief of them all. S. C. Gwynne s "Empire of the Summer Moon" spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches. Although readers may be more familiar with the tribal names Apache and Sioux, it was in fact the legendary fighting ability of the Comanches that determined just how and when the American West opened up. Comanche boys became adept bareback riders by age six; full Comanche braves were considered the best horsemen who ever rode. They were so masterful at war and so skillful with their arrows and lances that they stopped the northern drive of colonial Spain from Mexico and halted the French expansion westward from Louisiana. White settlers arriving in Texas from the eastern United States were surprised to find the frontier being rolled "backward "by Comanches incensed by the invasion of their tribal lands. So effective were the Comanches that they forced the creation of the Texas Rangers and account for the advent of the new weapon specifically designed to fight them: the six-gun. The war with the Comanches lasted four decades, in effect holding up the development of the new American nation. Gwynne s exhilarating account delivers a sweeping narrative that encompasses Spanish colonialism, the Civil War, the destruction of the buffalo herds, and the arrival of the railroads a historical feast for anyone interested in how the United States came into being. Against this backdrop Gwynne presents the compelling drama of Cynthia Ann Parker, a lovely nine-year-old girl with cornflower-blue eyes who was kidnapped by Comanches from the far Texas frontier in 1836. She grew to love her captors and became infamous as the White Squaw who refused to return until her tragic capture by Texas Rangers in 1860. More famous still was her son Quanah, a warrior who was never defeated and whose guerrilla wars in the Texas Panhandle made him a legend. S. C. Gwynne s account of these events is meticulously researched, intellectually provocative, and, above all, thrillingly told. "Empire of the Summer Moon "announces him as a major new writer of American history."

Ancient Pagan: Buddhist Plain of Merit

Description

Burma/Mayanmar has opened up to tourism in the last year or two and record numbers are now visiting this beautiful, mesmerising country. All visitors to Burma will visit the ancient kingdom of Pagan (now called Bagan), along with the Inle lake, it is the most visited place in Burma and captures the heart and imagination of all who see the sun set on this beguiling landscape of temples and stupas. Pagan is the largest and most resplendent centre of Buddhist art in the ancient world. Construction in the city peaked between the 11th and 13th centuries when over 2,000 temples, monasteries and stupas were created along the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy. Local architects mastered complex brick vaulting techniques unrivalled in Asia, while mural painters and stone carvers fashioned a distinctive style of Burmese art. The pace of building slowed dramatically after the capital shifted to the Mandalay area in the mid-14th century, but the city never lost its special religious and cultural significance, furnishing a field of merit to Buddhists old and new. Burma, now known as Myanmar, was terra incognita for many decades, but the lifting of travel restrictions has made this temple city now accessible.

James Lipton: Exaltation of Larks

Exaltation of Larks

Description

An "exaltation of larks"? Yes! And a "leap of leopards, " a "parliament of owls, " an "ostentation of peacocks, " a "smack of jellyfish, " and a "murder of crows"! For those who have ever wondered if the familiar "pride of lions" and "gaggle of geese" were only the tip of a linguistic iceberg, James Lipton has provided the definitive answer: here are hundreds of equally pithy, and often poetic, terms unearthed by Mr. Lipton in the Books of Venery that were the constant study of anyone who aspired to the tit of gentleman in the fifteenth century. When Mr. Lipton's painstaking research revealed that five hundred years ago the terms of venery had already been turned into the Game of Venery, he embarked on an odyssey that has given us a "slouch of models, " a "shrivel of critics, " an "unction of undertakers, " a "blur of Impressionists, " a "score of bachelors, " and a "pocket of quarterbacks." This ultimate edition of An Exaltation of Larks is Mr. Lipton's brilliant answer to the assault on language and literacy the last decades of the twentieth century. In it you will find more than 1,100 resurrected or newly minted contributions to that most endangered of all species, our language, in a setting of 250 witty, beautiful, and remarkably apt engravings.

A darkly comic play that explores the unexpected, bewildering, and life-changing consequences of challenging the status quo at a global level. Last week, Andrew was that guy with his girl lunching in KFC, discussing apartments and making plans for the future. Today he's in Moscow, in an undisclosed hotel room, on the run and at risk of assassination. Last week, a nobody. This week, America's Most Wanted: a man who humiliated his country with one touch of a button. Mike Bartlett's Wild premiered at Hampstead Theatre, London, in June 2016, in a production directed by James Macdonald. Jean Baudrillard (1929-2007) was a controversial social and cultural theorist known for his trenchant analyses of media and technological communication. Belonging to the generation of French thinkers that included Gilles Deleuze, Jean-Fran ois Lyotard, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Lacan, Baudrillard has at times been vilified by his detractors, but the influence of his work on critical thought and pop culture is impossible to deny (many might recognize his name from The Matrix movies, which claimed to be based on the French theorist's ideas). Steve Redhead takes a fresh look at Baudrillard in relation to the intellectual and political climates in which he wrote. Baudrillard sought to produce a theory of modernity, but the modern world of the 1950s was radically different from the reality of the early twenty-first century. Beginning with Baudrillard's initial publications in the 1960s and concluding with his writings on 9/11 and Exaltation of Larks pdf Abu Ghraib, Redhead guides the reader through Baudrillard's difficult texts and unorthodox views on current issues.

George Eliot,A. S. Byatt: The Mill on the Floss

The Mill on the Floss

Description

Drawing on George Eliot's own childhood experiences to craft an unforgettable story of first love, sibling rivalry and regret, The Mill on the Floss is edited with an introduction and notes by A.S. Byatt, author of Possession, in Penguin Classics. Brought up at Dorlcote Mill, Maggie Tulliver worships her brother Tom and is desperate to win the approval of her parents, but her passionate, wayward nature and her fierce intelligence bring her into constant conflict with her family. As she reaches adulthood, the clash between their expectations and her desires is painfully played out as she finds herself torn between her relationships with three very different men: her proud and stubborn brother; hunchbacked Tom Wakem, the son of her family's worst enemy; and the charismatic but dangerous Stephen Guest. With its poignant portrayal of sibling relationships, The Mill on the Floss is considered George Eliot's most autobiographical novel; it is also one of her most powerful and moving. In this edition, writer and critic A.S. Byatt, author of Possession, provides full explanatory notes and an introduction relating The Mill on the Floss to George Eliot's own life and times. Mary Ann Evans (1819-80) began her literary career as a translator, and later editor, of the Westminster Review. In 1857, she published Scenes of Clerical Life, the first of eight novels she would publish under the name of 'George Eliot', including The Mill on the Floss, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda. If you enjoyed The Mill on the Floss, you might like Thomas Hardy's Jude the Obscure, also available in Penguin Classics.

With 24 hour news channels and easy access we are bombarded with reports of crime from every corner of the globe. It seems that no sooner has The Mill on the Floss download ebook one tragedy hit than stories of another are being flashed across our screens and printed in our papers. But it is undeniable that there are for every generation some crimes that will never be forgotten. Just as people remember where they were when they heard that President Kennedy had been shot, who can forget hearing the awful news of the attacks of September 11th? And who could shake off the revulsion they felt when the sickening details of the Fritzl case came to light? Indeed, the horrific nature of a handful of crimes has ensured that certain names will never be forgotten: James Bulger, Sally Anne Bowman, Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman... This book features: a conceptual framework for creating equitable educational opportunities for low- and middle-income youth, instruction strategies based on analysis of more than 20 years of research on what works (and what doesn't work), a depiction of teachers, not as the problem when it comes to the achievement gap, but as champions of students, activities such as a Poverty and Class Awareness Quiz.

Cooking (for A**holes): Terrible Things I've Done. Tasty Apologies. Little to No Remorse.

Description

The garage may be on fire, but hey, at least dinner's good.Nothing says "I'm sorry" quite like food. Take it from noted asshole Zach Golden. He's discovered an important asshole loophole: If you put a delicious meal on the table, everybody will forget you're an unspeakably terrible person...until you do something else terrible. But hey, that's why there's dessert. From Pork and Chive Dumplings to Veal Ossobuco to Coconut Macaroons, Golden is guaranteed to have a dish up his sleeve that will undo any bad deed. He also probably has something sharp and potentially rusty up his sleeve, too, so don't make any sudden motions. "Cooking (for A**holes)" serves up 50 unbelievable (but true) stories of subterfuge, malfeasance, and impropriety, and the delicious recipes to help any asshole out of a bind.

The English Standard Version is a literal translation from the original Bible texts, firmly rooted in the tradition of Tyndale and King James but without their archaic language. First published in 2001, it is closest in style to the Revised Standard Version and is well suited to public reading and memorization. The ESV Wide-Margin Reference Bible is an enlargement of Cambridge's ESV Pitt Minion Bible. The text arrangement and pagination of the Bible text are identical but this edition uses enlarged text, has wide margins for personal notes and is printed on paper that stands up well to note-taking. Another bonus for bible study is a more extensive concordance. This Bible has red-letter text and includes cross-references, a concordance and maps. It has two ribbons and, like all Cambridge Bibles, it is Smyth-sewn for durability and Cooking (for A**holes): Terrible Things I've Done. Tasty Apologies. Little to No Remorse. free epub ease of use. It is a superb example of traditional craftsmanship: the pages have art-gilt (red-under-gold) edges; the cover is made from top-grain goatskin leather and edge-lined, giving it an exceptionally supple and flexible feel.

The Deeper Meaning of Liff: A Dictionary of Things There Aren't Any Words for Yet--But There Ought to Be

Description

Does the sensation of Tingrith(1) make you yelp? Do you bend sympathetically when you see someone Ahenny(2)? Can you deal with a Naugatuck(3) without causing a Toronto(4)? Will you suffer from Kettering(5) this summer? Probably. You are almost certainly familiar with all these experiences but just didn t know that there are words for them. Well, in fact, there aren t or rather there weren t, until Douglas Adams and John Lloyd decided to plug these egregious linguistic lacunae(6). They quickly realized that just as there are an awful lot of experiences that no one has a name for, so there are an awful lot of names for places you will never need to go to. What a waste. As responsible citizens of a small and crowded world, we must all learn the virtues of recycling(7) and put old, worn-out but still serviceable names to exciting, vibrant, new uses. This is the book that does that for you: "The Deeper Meaning of Liff" a whole new solution to the problem of Great Wakering(8) 1 The feeling of aluminum foil against your fillings. 2 The way people stand when examining other people s bookshelves. 3 A plastic packet containing shampoo, mustard, etc., which is impossible to open except by biting off the corners. 4 Generic term for anything that comes out in a gush, despite all your efforts to let it out carefully, e.g., flour into a white sauce, ketchup onto fish, a dog into the yard, and another naughty meaning that we can t put on the cover. 5 The marks left on your bottom and thighs after you ve been sitting sunbathing in a wicker chair. 6 God knows what this means 7 For instance, some of this book was first published in Britain twenty-six years ago. 8 Look it up yourself."

Colin Higgins: Harold and Maude

Harold and Maude

Description

Nineteen-year-old Harold Chasen is obsessed with death. He fakes suicides to shock his self-obsessed mother, drives a hearse, and attends funerals of complete strangers. Seventy-nine-year-old Maude Chardin, on the other hand, adores life. She liberates trees from city sidewalks and transplants them to the forest, paints smiles on the faces of church statues, and borrows cars to remind their owners that life is fleeting here today, gone tomorrow! A chance meeting between the two turns into a madcap, whirlwind romance, and Harold learns that life is worth living, and how to play the banjo. "Harold and Maude "started as Colin Higgins s master s thesis at UCLA film school before being made into the 1971 film directed by Hal Ashby. The quirky, dark comedy gained a loyal cult following, and in 1997 it was selected for inclusion on the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress. Higgins s novelization was released with the original film but has been out of print for more than thirty years. Fans who have seen the movie dozens of times will find this a valuable companion, as it gives fresh elements to watch for and answers many of the film s unresolved questions. "
